Seed Library

Thinking of seeds and the garden brought me to start this series of textiles entitled, Seed Library.

This one is Remolacha/Beet. It measures ~ 12 x 16 inches.

Loved working with this tweed yarn and the hand dyed yarn I made with black walnuts. I sculpted the yarn with twists to create space (rows) like we do when we plant seeds.

For the hanging finish, I’m using vintage wooden knitting needles which I fell in love with when I found them at a thrift store.

Seed libraries are wonderful connectors. It’s a way of sharing the hope of growing something.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve noticed that some of the local libraries have added a seed library. One can ‘check out’ seeds with the requirement that you bring back more seeds at the end of the season so others can grow things too.

Homegrown beets are delicious. The seeds are beautiful too. They were one of the first seeds I used on the rooftop garden in Brooklyn to engage our little boy (he’s a teen now!) and connect with nature in an urban environment.
